China, Germany strengthen strategic dialogue on diplomacy and security in a meeting between both foreign ministers.
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and German Federal Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock jointly presided over the seventh round of the China-Germany Strategic Dialogue on Diplomacy and Security in Beijing on Monday.
Wang, who is also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, emphasized China’s consistent and stable policy towards Germany, highlighting its recognition of Germany as a key cooperative partner since diplomatic ties were established 52 years ago.
Acknowledging differences between the two nations, Wang stated that such disparities should neither hinder collaboration nor lead to conflict.
As the second and third largest global economies, China and Germany should work together to overcome challenges, focus on dialogue and cooperation, reject outdated Cold War mentalities, and jointly tackle external risks and global issues, Wang urged.
Baerbock noted the extensive scope of cooperation between Germany and China and reaffirmed Germany’s commitment to the one-China policy, emphasizing the importance of candid dialogue and strategic communication to navigate a turbulent global landscape and support world peace and stability.
She also commended China for its significant contributions to combating climate change.
Wang further highlighted the need for a proper strategic understanding to sustain stable China-Germany relations. He described China as a proponent of global peace, development, and stability, advocating for mutual respect and understanding as the foundation for productive cooperation.
Wang clarified that the China-Germany relationship is not aimed at any third party and should remain free from external influences.
He also raised concerns over the EU’s anti-subsidy tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles, calling them a violation of free trade principles and a contentious issue in China-EU relations. Wang encouraged Germany and Europe to adopt pragmatic approaches to resolve trade disputes through dialogue.
Baerbock expressed Germany’s support for continued EU-China negotiations on the anti-subsidy measures for electric vehicles to reach a mutually beneficial resolution.
