China, Germany pledge dialogue on global issues as Chinese FM holds a phone conversation with his German counterpart.
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi called for stronger mutually beneficial cooperation between China and Germany and urged both countries to jointly resist unilateralism and protectionist measures during a phone conversation with German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul on Monday.
Wang, who is also a member of the Communist Party of China’s Political Bureau, made these comments during his first official interaction with Wadephul since the latter assumed office.
He extended congratulations to Wadephul and emphasized that China-Germany relations hold strategic importance beyond bilateral ties, significantly impacting global economic trends and geopolitical stability.
Highlighting the two countries’ comprehensive strategic partnership, Wang expressed hope that Germany’s new leadership would maintain a balanced and practical approach in its policy toward China.
Wang underscored that Taiwan is a matter of China’s core interests and voiced confidence that Germany would remain committed to the one-China principle, just as China supported German reunification in the past.
Given the complementary nature of both economies and their tightly interlinked industries, Wang said deeper collaboration is the logical path forward. He cautioned against efforts to hinder bilateral ties under the pretext of “de-risking.”
Marking the 50th anniversary of China-EU diplomatic relations, Wang called this a pivotal moment for future cooperation. He encouraged Germany to use its influence within the EU to advance high-quality China-EU engagement through strengthened bilateral ties.
He also urged the EU to work with China toward resolving the anti-subsidy dispute concerning Chinese electric vehicles and to elevate the scope and quality of their cooperation.
Wang emphasized that China and Germany should fulfill their responsibilities as leading global players by championing free trade, rejecting unilateralism and protectionism, and safeguarding global supply chain stability and the multilateral system centered on the United Nations.
In response, Wadephul acknowledged the global significance of China-Germany ties and affirmed the new German government’s commitment to fostering a proactive and constructive relationship with China.
He reiterated Germany’s firm adherence to the one-China policy and stated that Germany aims to be a dependable and consistent partner to China.
As a key EU member, Germany is committed to resolving disputes—such as the EV anti-subsidy case—through dialogue and negotiations, Wadephul said, expressing hope for progress in EU-China relations.
The two ministers also exchanged views on the Ukraine conflict. Wang reaffirmed China’s support for peace efforts and its commitment to achieving a fair and lasting resolution through direct talks.
Wadephul, in turn, encouraged China to use its influence to facilitate a ceasefire and help bring the conflict to a swift conclusion.
