Thirteen years after the China-Europe Railway Express (CRE) began operations in Duisburg, the German city’s status as a key hub on the route has steadily grown. The busy terminals, ports, and warehouses in Duisburg underscored the city’s increasing activity. The CRE has had a notable effect on the local business community.
At one of Duisburg’s main logistics hubs, AUKLogis GmbH, the German subsidiary of the Chinese logistics firm Western Post, offers storage and customs clearance for CRE users. The company has seen local traders evolve from initial skepticism to forming long-term partnerships, recognizing the service’s value.
“Our clients often highlight the railway’s unmatched speed and reliability compared to other freight methods,” said Fan Yuliang, warehouse manager at AUKLogis GmbH. With expanding routes, trust in the service has grown stronger.
Daniele Materazzo, an operator for China-Europe Railway Express at AUKLogis, shared that he now enjoys better pay and a sense of stability with the company. He added, “Despite language and cultural differences, we work together as a team, and I feel completely at home here.”
Markus Bangen, CEO of Duisburger Hafen AG (Duisport), emphasized that the railway is strengthening Europe-China ties, creating a new international transport market that benefits both regions’ economies. Moreover, Duisburg’s role in the railway continues to grow, drawing investment, creating jobs, and boosting the logistics sector.
In August, a new direct route from Chongqing to Duisburg, via the Caspian Sea, was launched. This route adds a new transport option along the Middle Corridor, connecting China and Europe through Central Asia and the southern Caucasus.
Furthermore, Bangen explained that the experience gained through CRE operations over the last decade will speed up the development of the Middle Corridor, as participants are already familiar with the system.
CRE has not only improved the efficiency and cost of transporting goods from China to Europe but also opened new opportunities for European manufacturers and traders to access the Chinese market, according to Chinese Consul General in Dusseldorf, Du Chunguo.
Additionally, this trade exchange has enhanced consumer welfare and created jobs along the route.
