Named after a legendary sea dragon, Jiaolong can dive beyond 7,000 meters and has explored the Pacific, Indian, and Atlantic Oceans.
Currently undergoing upgrades, Jiaolong has received substantial improvements to key components, including its lithium battery system.
The submersible, inspired by the mythical sea dragon, is set for tank testing in February, followed by sea trials in the South China Sea in March.
Meanwhile, Ocean No. 1 is also receiving major enhancements, including the addition of remotely operated underwater vehicles, which will strengthen its ability to conduct deep-sea resource surveys and exploration, according to the administration.
As China’s first modern ocean-going scientific research vessel, Ocean No. 1 has been in service for over 40 years and has successfully carried out 27 oceanographic research expeditions.
