The Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) breaks away from outdated notions such as the clash of civilizations, Cold War mentality, zero-sum thinking, and exclusive alliances. Instead, it represents a fresh approach to international relations, Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun stated on Monday.
SCO Secretary-General Nurlan Yermekbayev remarked in an interview that comparing NATO to the SCO is inappropriate. He highlighted that the SCO is committed to non-alignment and de-ideologization, emphasizing peace and collaboration.
Guo noted that, over the 24 years since its establishment, the SCO has consistently expanded its partnerships and achieved high-quality development. It has grown into a regional organization with the widest geographic coverage and largest population.
According to Guo, the SCO’s success lies in its commitment to the Shanghai Spirit. This guiding philosophy promotes mutual trust, mutual benefit, equality, consultation, respect for cultural diversity, and a shared commitment to development. These principles ensure the organization’s vitality and drive for cooperation.
As the current rotating chair of the SCO, China aims to uphold the motto “Upholding the Shanghai Spirit: SCO on the Move.” Guo said that China will work closely with member states to enhance cooperation in areas such as politics, security, economy, and cultural exchanges, fostering a more unified SCO community with a shared future.
