Artificial Intelligence (AI) presents significant opportunities for collaboration between China and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), according to Cambodian Permanent Deputy Prime Minister Vongsey Vissoth. Speaking at the “China-ASEAN Cooperation on AI Development and Governance” symposium in Phnom Penh on Monday, Vissoth emphasized how China’s Global AI Governance Initiative aligns with ASEAN’s vision for multilateral cooperation, aiming for shared goals in bridging regional and global aspirations.
Vissoth noted that AI holds vast potential for ASEAN and China, enabling the overcoming of developmental challenges, fostering prosperity, inclusivity, and sustainability. AI is not just a tool, he added, but a bridge that connects efforts to modernize agriculture, improve healthcare, and transform governance.
He highlighted the synergy between ASEAN’s regional initiatives and China’s AI governance, creating a strong platform for driving innovation and fostering inclusive policies, benefiting the region and ensuring AI’s positive impact on people’s lives.
To harness AI for inclusive growth, China and ASEAN have strengthened cooperation in digital transformation, with concrete measures discussed at the 27th ASEAN-China Summit in Laos. Vissoth expressed confidence that the partnership would help shape AI policies that prioritize ethics, data security, fairness, and promote regional resilience and prosperity.
Vissoth concluded by emphasizing that AI’s future lies in its values and vision. Together, China and ASEAN can shape an AI-driven future that enhances societies, boosts economies, and fosters mutual understanding, ensuring fairness, resilience, and prosperity for all.
The symposium, co-hosted by the Economic, Social and Cultural Council of Cambodia and the China Institute of International Studies, was attended by around 300 participants from various sectors.
