Chinese Foreign Minister, Wang Yi, also a member of the Political Bureau of CPC Central Committee held annual Consultation Mechanism meeting with his Thai counterpart, Maris Sangiampongsa, in Beijing on Tuesday. China and Thailand FMs Strengthen Cooperation and pledged to expand exchanges.
Wang, member of Political Bureau of Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, emphasized on friendly relations with Thailand as a neighbor, noting that the two states have always maintained mutual trust and cooperation. He called on both parties to enhance strategic cooperation as the 50th anniversary of the China and Thailand diplomatic ties approaches next year.
Wang also stated that China has maintained its position as Thailand’s largest trading partner for more than a decade with becoming the largest source of foreign investment to the country. He added that more than 3 million Chinese tourists have visited Thailand this year.
Additionally, he suggested that in addition to clearing up the obstructions in the China-Laos-Thailand Railway, China and Thailand should also increase their connectivity, strengthen their collaboration in law enforcement and security and work collectively combat transnational crimes like online gambling and digital fraud.
In order to maintain friendly relations, Wang called on both sides to make full advantage of the ‘visa-free’ era – a bilateral agreement on visa exemption which came into force from March 1 – by expanding cultural exchanges, exchanges among youth and promoting China and Thailand friendships along the generations.
Maris, for his part, stated that Thailand attaches paramount importance to its relations with China and will continue its commitment to the One-China policy.
According to Sangiampongsa, Thailand is willing to collaborate with China to create a successful plan for the 50th anniversary of diplomatic ties between the two countries to ensure sustainable development of long-term bilateral relations and strengthen cooperation
He added that Thailand is ready to work with China to boost high-level discussions, expand cross-cultural and people to people exchange and fortify practical cooperation in areas like digital economy, electric cars, renewable energy, tourism and other arenas that will benefit both sides.
Wang underscored that maintaining the ASEAN centered regional cooperation architecture in East Asia is essential, as is resisting the formation of an exclusive and closed clique let alone allowing non regional forces to interfere in the region.
Wang added that it is imperative to guard against the negative consequences of the Indo Pacific strategy and prevent North Atlantic Treaty Organization from infringing into the Asia Pacific region. In this regard, China is willing to work closely and strengthen cooperation with the ASEAN countries, Wang said.
The Chinese Thai FMs Consultation Mechanism meeting in Beijing also discussed upon the situation in Myanmar, Lancang-Mekong cooperation and regional cooperation framework in East Asia.
