China and New Zealand pledge deeper cooperation at APEC as the Chinese President Xi Jinping met with New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon on the sidelines of APEC Summit in Lima.

Chinese President Xi Jinping expressed China’s readiness to work with New Zealand to strengthen a bilateral relationship rooted in mutual respect, tolerance, collaboration, and shared growth. His comments were made during a meeting with New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon at the 31st APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting.

Reflecting on a decade since the establishment of a comprehensive strategic partnership during his visit to New Zealand, Xi highlighted the consistent and positive trajectory of China-New Zealand ties. He emphasized the relationship’s contributions to both nations’ prosperity, underscoring its enduring value. Xi noted that, as key Asia-Pacific members with complementary economies and no historical grievances, the two sides should see each other as partners and manage their differences pragmatically.

Xi urged building a bilateral relationship focused on respect, tolerance, and mutual progress, calling for cooperation across various sectors, including subnational institutions, youth, media, and academia. He welcomed strengthened exchanges to deepen bilateral friendship, highlighted by China’s inclusion of New Zealand in its visa-free policy to encourage more visits for work and travel.

Xi further pledged collaboration with New Zealand on multilateral platforms such as the United Nations, APEC, and the World Trade Organization to promote peace and stability regionally and globally.

Prime Minister Luxon commended China as a great nation and acknowledged the robust growth in bilateral relations and people-to-people bonds since Xi’s visit ten years ago. New Zealand remains dedicated to enhancing the strategic partnership, adhering to the one-China policy, and fostering high-level exchanges. Luxon expressed readiness to expand cooperation in economic, environmental, and climate-related areas, while emphasizing the importance of collaboration through multilateral frameworks like APEC to sustain regional trade openness and prosperity.
