Chinese President Xi Jinping stated that China and Chile should broaden their bilateral cooperation into more sustainable and expansive areas, supported by advanced free trade and more open industrial policies. He expressed this during a meeting with Chilean President Gabriel Boric on the sidelines of the 31st APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting.
Xi highlighted that Chile was the first South American nation to establish diplomatic ties with China and noted the long history of mutual support between the two countries. Over the past fifty years, both have been reliable partners, sharing trust and working together for mutual benefit.
Xi proposed that China and Chile use the 55th anniversary of their diplomatic relations next year to deepen strategic communication, enhance mutually beneficial cooperation, share development opportunities, and push forward their comprehensive strategic partnership, benefiting both nations.
He urged for continued strengthening of exchanges between China and Chile across various fields, emphasizing mutual respect, trust, and connectivity, with a focus on expanding the scope of their cooperation.
Xi emphasized the importance of cooperation in areas such as infrastructure, clean energy, and information and communications, calling for further expansion of their cooperation into more sustainable sectors, supported by advanced free trade agreements and open industrial policies.
China welcomes more high-quality Chilean exports and supports Chinese businesses investing in Chile. Xi urged Chile to provide a transparent, open, and non-discriminatory business environment for Chinese enterprises to thrive.
China is eager to enhance communication and cooperation with Chile within multilateral organizations like the United Nations, the World Trade Organization, and APEC. Xi emphasized the importance of true multilateralism, safeguarding global supply chains, and promoting the shared interests of the Global South.
President Boric praised the strong and fruitful economic ties between Chile and China, noting the growing importance of their relationship in the current international context. He reaffirmed Chile’s commitment to the one-China policy and its willingness to deepen exchanges and cooperation in areas like culture and education.
Boric congratulated Xi on the opening of Chancay Port and expressed Chile’s eagerness for increased collaboration with Chinese enterprises, particularly in infrastructure and capacity-building projects. Chile, he said, would continue to create a favorable business environment for Chinese companies.
Furthermore, Chile is committed to closer cooperation with China within multilateral platforms like APEC, opposing protectionism, and safeguarding global free trade and stable supply chains. Boric also expressed Chile’s support for China’s accession to the CPTPP and the Digital Economy Partnership Agreement.
