China and Africa unite for global governance reform as Chinese FM Wang Yi made these remarks during his visit to Africa.
China is prepared to collaborate with African nations to push forward reforms in the global governance system, according to Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi. Wang, who is also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, made these remarks during an interview with Chinese media after visiting Namibia, the Republic of the Congo, Chad, and Nigeria.
Wang emphasized that the collective rise of the Global South is reshaping the international landscape. He noted that China and Africa play crucial roles as driving forces for the development and revival of the Global South. Both share a strong commitment to establishing a fair and just global governance system.
Reflecting on history, Wang stated that China and Africa should lead efforts to rectify historical injustices. He highlighted that African nations have endured hardships not only due to colonialism but also because of hegemonism and power politics, which represent some of the most significant historical wrongs faced by Africa.
As a steadfast friend and partner, China will continue to support African nations in addressing these historical injustices. Wang reiterated China’s firm opposition to external interference in Africa’s internal affairs and expressed advocacy for special arrangements to address Africa’s concerns in the reform of the United Nations Security Council.
Focusing on the present, Wang urged China and Africa to work pragmatically toward the rise of the Global South. He pointed out that China, as the largest developing country, remains committed to fostering the unity and revitalization of developing nations.
Wang highlighted Chinese President Xi Jinping’s proposals at last year’s Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) Summit in Beijing, which centered on six modernization features tailored to the needs of developing nations. He stressed that Africa, like any other region, has the right to modernization, and global modernization cannot be achieved without Africa’s active participation.
China intends to use the implementation of the FOCAC Beijing Summit outcomes as a platform to partner with African countries in supporting mutual modernization efforts. Wang said this collaboration will set the direction for achieving global modernization.
Looking ahead, Wang reaffirmed China’s readiness to join Africa in practicing principles of extensive consultation, joint contribution, and shared benefits in global governance. He outlined plans to advance high-quality Belt and Road cooperation and implement the Global Development Initiative, the Global Security Initiative, and the Global Civilization Initiative.
China also aims to work with African nations to enhance their representation and influence in global trade and financial governance systems. Wang expressed optimism about achieving progress in China-Africa cooperation in areas such as global digital and ecological governance, thereby contributing to reforms in the global governance system.
