Chengdu to lead with bionic robots for policing with a specialized laboratory to be set up.

A specialized laboratory dedicated to advancing bionic robots for law enforcement purposes is set to be established in Sichuan Province, southwest China.

Located in Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan, Sichuan Bionic Robotics Technology Co., Ltd., and the Public Security Bureau of the Chengdu High-Tech Industrial Development Zone announced on Thursday their plans to create the lab. This initiative aims to develop innovative applications of intelligent robotics for enhanced policing and urban management, as reported by Chengdu Daily.

The partnership will leverage shared resources and complementary expertise to improve the integration of robotics into smart policing and urban governance. The goal is to boost the efficiency of law enforcement operations and ensure safer, more reliable urban management systems.

In December 2024, the company introduced its four-legged robotic dog, “Lingtong,” which was deployed for street patrols in Chengdu. These advanced robotic dogs are equipped with self-developed “brains,” enabling them to autonomously conduct tasks such as inspections, identification, and detection.

Features of the Robotic Dog

Each robotic dog weighs around 50 kg and can travel at speeds of up to 4 meters per second. Their capabilities include running, jumping, avoiding obstacles, automatic navigation, and self-recharging.

According to the Public Security Bureau, these robotic dogs are primarily intended for hazardous scenarios such as bomb disposal, firefighting, and operations in toxic environments. Plans are also underway to integrate the robotic dogs with drones and various sensors to broaden their applications in daily police work.

Cheng Qingmiao, head of the publicity office at Sichuan Bionic Robotics Technology Co., Ltd., stated that these industrial-grade robots are currently targeted for tasks like security inspections and emergency rescues. They also serve as a foundation for exploring humanoid robot applications.

Looking ahead, the focus will be on improving the agility and responsiveness of humanoid robots’ joints while managing size and cost. This approach aims to broaden their usability across diverse scenarios.

Moreover, to accelerate innovation, the Chengdu High-Tech Zone plans to utilize its innovation platforms and leading robotics enterprises. These efforts will drive advancements in robotics and core robotic brain technologies, contributing to the establishment of a globally competitive robotics industry cluster in Chengdu.
