Beijing, Shanghai, HK among top global innovation cities according to a recent report.
Beijing, Shanghai, and Hong Kong have secured spots among the world’s top 10 innovation cities, alongside major cities from the United States, Britain, and Japan, according to a recently released report on science and technology innovation.
The report, published on Friday, was jointly compiled by the Shenzhen International Science and Technology Information Center, the Center for Industrial Development and Environmental Governance of Tsinghua University, and research analytics company Elsevier, as noted by Science and Technology Daily on Saturday.
Evaluating 30 cities globally, the report uses a collaborative development index focused on education, science and technology, and talent. It provides insights into urban innovation and development trends while highlighting the strength of cities in driving science and technology progress.
The top 10 innovation cities include Boston, San Francisco, Beijing, London, New York, Los Angeles, Seattle, Shanghai, Hong Kong, and Tokyo.
In education, Boston, London, and Hong Kong lead the rankings, while London, Beijing, Shanghai, and New York show balanced development in both basic and higher education systems.
In terms of innovation, San Francisco, Boston, and Beijing claim the top three positions. The report emphasizes that strengthening the innovation ecosystem—by enhancing the economic foundation, integrating industry and academia, boosting scientific infrastructure, and fostering cross-regional collaboration—is vital for Chinese cities to further improve their innovation capacity.
Regarding talent development, five U.S. cities and five Chinese cities, including Beijing, Shenzhen, Hong Kong, Guangzhou, and Shanghai, are ranked in the top 10.
The report highlights the strong talent potential of Chinese cities like Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Hong Kong, and Shanghai, which demonstrate robust momentum in talent development and reflect their growing strength in global innovation.
