Asian Winter Games Torch Relay kicks off in Harbin highlighting city’s heritage.
The torch relay for the ninth Asian Winter Games commenced on Monday in Harbin, located in northeast China’s Heilongjiang Province.
A total of 120 torchbearers, ranging in age from 16 to 83, are carrying the flame through key landmarks in Harbin. The event aims to be simple, safe, and spectacular while highlighting the city’s natural beauty, cultural heritage, and urban appeal.
According to Li Na, head of the Torch Relay Command Center’s Torchbearer and Volunteer Management Team, the relay will span one day, covering an 11-kilometer route. It will include a launch ceremony, a closing ceremony, and community performances along the way.
Torchbearers were selected based on inclusivity, representation, and fairness, with participants from the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA), the Chinese Olympic Committee, the Asian Winter Games Organizing Committee, various Heilongjiang cities, and sponsoring enterprises, Li explained.
Additionally, the Asian Winter Games kicked off its first event, ice hockey, earlier in the day. China’s athletes are set to debut in the mixed doubles curling event on Tuesday.
