Ambassador Jiang Zaidong’s interaction with Pakistani media highlighted key aspects of China’s neighborhood diplomacy and the long standing relationship with Pakistan.
Chinese Ambassador to Pakistan, Jiang Zaidong, engaged in an extensive discussion with Pakistani media, addressing regional and global issues while reaffirming China’s strategic focus on neighboring countries and its partnership with Pakistan. He began by referencing President Xi Jinping’s speech at the CPC Central Conference on Neighboring Countries held in Beijing on April 8–9, where Xi emphasized the importance of creating a “community with a shared future” among China’s neighbors. He highlighted China’s dedication to values such as friendship, sincerity, mutual benefit, and inclusiveness and pointed out that China has formed such partnerships with 17 neighboring nations, including Pakistan, and signed Belt and Road agreements with 25 countries, all driven by Xi’s strategic leadership.
Focusing on China-Pakistan relations, Ambassador Jiang reiterated Pakistan’s critical role in China’s neighborhood diplomacy. He noted the significance of two major milestones: the 10th anniversary of President Xi’s visit to Pakistan and the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations in 2026, which he described as crucial for further strengthening bilateral ties. The Ambassador highlighted four key areas for cooperation: building stronger strategic trust, aligning China’s Belt and Road Initiative with Pakistan’s “5Es” framework to enhance CPEC, advancing security cooperation through the Global Security Initiative (GSI), and fostering deeper people-to-people connectivity.
On global economic challenges, Ambassador Jiang criticized the U.S. for imposing unilateral tariffs, accusing it of economic coercion. He recalled the history of U.S. tariffs, such as the 1930 Smoot-Hawley Act, which caused unemployment and financial instability globally. He warned that the U.S. was repeating past mistakes and cited economic forecasts predicting job losses and rising inflation as a result of its current tariff policies.
In response to concerns about the impact of U.S. tariffs on China, Ambassador Jiang remained confident, stating that China has become more resilient, reducing its dependency on U.S. exports while maintaining consistent economic growth. He highlighted that in Q1 of 2025, China’s GDP grew by 5.4% and exports by 6.9%, underscoring the strength of China’s economy. He reaffirmed China’s commitment to pursuing high-quality development and openness to international markets.
Finally, Ambassador Jiang addressed the role of developing countries in responding to U.S. protectionism, urging unity among nations in the Global South. He emphasized the need for collective resistance to unilateral actions and the importance of defending the WTO-centered multilateral trading system. He stated that Pakistan and China, as influential members of the Global South, should take a leadership role in promoting fairness, justice, and inclusive globalization.
