Ambassador Hashmi explores environmental cooperation between China and Pakistan as he visited CRAES and signed initial agreement.
Pakistani Ambassador to China, Khalil Hashmi, visited the Chinese Research Academy of Environmental Sciences (CRAES) to explore opportunities for cooperation in environmental science and technology between the two nations.
During the discussions, both sides reached an initial agreement on several joint initiatives, including signing an MoU between CRAES and relevant departments in Punjab Province, establishing a “Belt and Road” laboratory, and securing funding for collaborative projects.
In 2024, Chinese environmental experts engaged with nine Punjab government departments, including Environmental Protection, Development and Reform, Housing and Urban Development, Transportation, and Agriculture. They conducted site inspections at local factories and provided an initial analysis of Pakistan’s smog problem, offering both short- and long-term solutions for mitigation.
CRAES Vice President Quan Zhanjun highlighted the ongoing partnership between CRAES and Punjab Province in air pollution control. He assured that CRAES would leverage its research platforms, expertise, and technology to help Pakistan improve its environmental conditions.
Chinese officials expressed their hope that Pakistan’s Embassy in China would facilitate stronger ties between CRAES and Pakistan’s environmental institutions, enabling the effective application of China’s air pollution management strategies in Pakistan.
Ambassador Hashmi praised China’s achievements in air quality improvement, particularly the “Beijing Miracle,” as a model for developing countries. He affirmed that the Pakistani Embassy in China would actively support the transfer of China’s successful air pollution control strategies to Pakistan, aiming to replicate a “Lahore Miracle” to enhance Punjab’s environmental management.
