In recent weeks, tensions between Lebanon and Israel have escalated significantly, making the establishment of a ceasefire “an overarching priority,” according to Fu Cong, China’s permanent representative to the United Nations (UN), who spoke on Thursday.
During a Security Council briefing regarding the Lebanese-Israeli situation, Fu reported that the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) had attacked positions held by the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) and an observation tower, resulting in injuries to UNIFIL personnel.
Fu expressed “grave concerns and strong condemnation” regarding these events. He highlighted that UNIFIL operates under a mandate from the Security Council resolution, and any intentional assaults on peacekeepers represent a serious breach of international humanitarian law and Security Council Resolution 1701. “These acts must cease immediately,” he stated.
The ambassador demanded an investigation into these attacks and accountability for those responsible. He emphasized the need for measures to prevent any recurrence, insisting that all parties involved in the conflict must ensure the safety and security of UN personnel and assets, including those of UNIFIL.
Fu pointed out that the Middle East cannot sustain a full-scale war, asserting, “The conflict cannot continue to expand.” He urged all parties to prioritize regional peace and stability, approach the current situation with calmness, rationality, and responsibility, and make genuine efforts to break the cycle of violence.
He mentioned that all factions in Lebanon have collectively called for an immediate ceasefire, with the Arab League issuing a clear appeal for the same.
“It is evident who holds the key to resolving this crisis,” the envoy remarked, urging Israel to abandon its reliance on force, make sound political choices, respect Lebanon’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, and stop its reckless actions that could lead the region into further disaster.
Fu stressed that the Security Council must act without delay, noting that most members have already achieved broad consensus on de-escalating the conflict, reaching a ceasefire, halting violence, and pursuing diplomatic solutions.
“We urge a particular country to end its passive procrastination, cover-up, and complicity. Instead, it should act responsibly and take a constructive role to prevent further destabilization of the situation,” he concluded.
