The China-Pakistan Information Corridor (CPIC) has been officially launched at the Pakistan-China Friendship Centre in Islamabad, creating a new platform to strengthen information sharing, public diplomacy and cooperation between the two countries.
Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Attaullah Tarar, Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Mao Ning, Chinese Ambassador to Pakistan Jiang Zaidong and Secretary Information and Broadcasting Ashfaq Ahmed Khalil addressed the launch ceremony.
The initiative aims to connect media organisations, businesses, think tanks, universities, scholars and young people through a coordinated framework for information exchange and bilateral engagement.
Attaullah Tarar Highlights the Importance of Pakistan-China Friendship
Addressing the ceremony, Attaullah Tarar said generations of Pakistanis and Chinese had preserved stories of friendship and mutual support. He emphasized that the current generation had a responsibility to pass this legacy on to future generations.
Tarar described the Pakistan-China friendship as a unique bond and said the importance of the Information Corridor had grown amid increasing challenges surrounding misinformation and public understanding.
He announced that the first regional office under the Corridor’s trade pillar had been established in Karachi.
He also described the relationship between the two initiatives by saying that CPEC connects the economies of Pakistan and China, while the Information Corridor would connect their people through shared ideas and understanding.
Four Pillars of the Information Corridor
The CPIC is built around four main pillars designed to expand cooperation across different sectors.
- Media and fact-checking: Promotes verified news exchange between Pakistani and Chinese media organisations and supports efforts to counter misinformation.
- Business and enterprise: Encourages trade, investment and stronger links between businesses in both countries.
- Think tanks and research: Supports joint research, policy dialogue, academic engagement and publications.
- Culture, tourism and youth: Expands cultural exchanges, tourism cooperation and opportunities for young people to engage with each other.
Tarar said the initiative would bring together institutions and communities in an integrated ecosystem, helping replace misinformation with verified information and strengthen mutual confidence.
Chinese Ambassador Calls for Greater Information Sharing
Chinese Ambassador to Pakistan Jiang Zaidong said the Information Corridor would help strengthen understanding of each other’s cultures and traditions through greater information sharing.
He also highlighted the importance of addressing propaganda and improving public understanding of the longstanding relationship between Pakistan and China.
Jiang said the initiative would provide another platform for promoting bilateral cooperation and supporting public engagement as the two countries advance CPEC 2.0.
Mao Ning Stresses Accurate and Reliable Information
Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Mao Ning described the launch as important and timely, noting that fake news and misinformation had become growing challenges.
She emphasized the need to promote accurate, timely and reliable information about cooperation between the two countries.
Mao said the Corridor’s four pillars would help share more stories about Pakistan-China collaboration and enable more people to understand the friendship between the two nations.
She added that the initiative would strengthen public support for the Pakistan-China All-Weather Strategic Cooperative Partnership and contribute to its long-term development.
Information Corridor to Build on Existing Media Cooperation
Secretary Information and Broadcasting Ashfaq Ahmed Khalil said the CPIC was designed to bring together media organisations, think tanks, academic institutions, businesses and young people from both countries.
He said the initiative would enable Pakistan and China to communicate their shared story through accurate and constructive engagement.
Khalil noted that agreements were already in place between news agencies, broadcasters and film organisations for news exchange, content sharing and co-production. These existing arrangements would provide a foundation for expanding cooperation through the new platform.
He thanked China and the Chinese Embassy in Pakistan for their support in developing the initiative.
Khalil also highlighted the Corridor’s potential to improve the exchange of information, media content and professional expertise while promoting credible reporting on Pakistan-China relations.
Cultural Performances Mark the Launch
The ceremony included documentaries showcasing the history of the Pakistan-China All-Weather Strategic Cooperative Partnership, followed by cultural performances celebrating the friendship between the two countries.
The launch of the China-Pakistan Information Corridor adds an information and public engagement dimension to cooperation under CPEC 2.0. By linking media, business, research and cultural exchanges, the initiative aims to strengthen mutual understanding and complement the countries’ broader economic and strategic partnership.
