Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar met SCO Secretary-General Nurlan Yermekbayev in Islamabad on Wednesday. Dar pledged deeper engagement with the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO). Additionally, Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry confirmed the two officials reviewed the bloc’s priorities. They also explored ways to tighten cooperation among member states. Economy, transport, and regional connectivity topped the agenda.
Regional Outlook Takes Center Stage
Furthermore, the discussions extended beyond bilateral matters. Both officials touched on wider regional and global developments. Yermekbayev, meanwhile, praised Islamabad’s constructive contributions toward regional peace and stability. As a result, Pakistan’s profile within the SCO continues to rise.
Foreign Ministers’ Meeting Looms in Bishkek
The secretary-general also updated Dar on preparations for the SCO Council of Foreign Ministers meeting. This gathering will convene in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. Moreover, Yermekbayev outlined proposals to sharpen the organization’s efficiency. These proposals hint at fresh momentum building toward the meeting.
Pakistan SCO Chairmanship Handover Nears
Dar reaffirmed his government’s resolve to work alongside fellow member states. Pakistan will soon assume the rotating chairmanship of the SCO Council of Heads of State this September. Consequently, this role places Islamabad at the helm of the bloc’s strategic direction for the coming term.
Islamabad Eyes 2027 Summit Hosting Duties
Looking ahead, Dar confirmed Pakistan’s readiness to host the SCO Summit in 2027. The Foreign Ministry noted this commitment underscores Islamabad’s expanding role in regional multilateral diplomacy.
