A strong magnitude 7.8 earthquake has struck off the coast of the southern Philippines, near Maasim in Sarangani, Mindanao. As a result, at least 19 people have died, while authorities warn the toll may rise further.

Tsunami Warnings Issued Across the Pacific

Immediately after the quake, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued alerts for several Pacific territories. In addition, coastal areas in Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, and Palau were placed on high alert due to potential wave activity.

Regional Alerts and Temporary Evacuations

Meanwhile, parts of Indonesia’s North Sulawesi and Malaysia’s Sabah region also monitored coastal conditions closely. However, tsunami warnings were later lifted after data confirmed that destructive waves did not fully develop.

Severe Damage in Mindanao Region

In Mindanao, rescue teams are struggling with collapsed buildings, damaged roads, and power outages. Moreover, local authorities report more than 130 injuries, while emergency shelters continue to receive displaced residents.

Rescue Operations Face Major Challenges

Additionally, landslides triggered by aftershocks have cut off remote villages, making rescue operations more difficult. International aid agencies are working with the Philippine military to restore access and deliver essential supplies.

Urgent Humanitarian Response Underway

Furthermore, officials have warned of a growing humanitarian crisis due to damaged water systems and communication networks. Consequently, urgent supplies of food, clean water, and medical aid are being requested to support affected communities.
