Pakistan is strengthening its energy resilience through Chinese-backed projects under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) amid global market disruptions and rising fuel costs.Shah Jahan Mirza, Managing Director of the Private Power and Infrastructure Board (PPIB), said CPEC power projects helped Pakistan overcome severe electricity shortages and improve energy security.
He highlighted that major investments in Thar coal, hydropower, wind, and solar projects have reduced reliance on imported fuels while ensuring sustainable and affordable electricity generation.Renewable energy has expanded rapidly, with solar and wind projects contributing significantly, alongside large hydropower projects like Suki Kinari and Karot under CPEC.
Mirza noted that rooftop solar adoption has surged across Pakistan due to falling equipment costs and supportive government policies, adding thousands of megawatts to the energy mix.Chinese investment and technology continue to play a key role, from supplying solar equipment to developing infrastructure, including transmission systems and grid modernization.
