Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif on Wednesday participated in the high-level meeting of the Global Development Initiative (GDI), chaired by Chinese Premier Li Qiang, held under the theme “Recommit to our Original Aspirations, United to Build a Brighter Future for Development.”
During the session, the prime minister held an informal exchange with Premier Li Qiang and also met United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres. His participation was viewed as another reaffirmation of the exemplary Pakistan-China friendship.
It may be recalled that during his recent visit to Beijing, PM Shehbaz lauded President Xi Jinping’s vision of the GDI, describing it as a pivotal initiative for advancing sustainable development at regional and global levels.
Meeting with the Sri Lankan President
On the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, Prime Minister Shehbaz also met Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake. The discussions, held in a warm and cordial atmosphere, focused on strengthening multifaceted engagement between the two countries across political, economic, cultural, and defence spheres.
Both leaders reviewed bilateral cooperation in trade, education, cultural exchanges, and defence, while also exchanging views on regional and global developments. They expressed satisfaction over the robustness of Pakistan-Sri Lanka relations and agreed to expand cooperation further, including in sports, particularly cricket, as a means of enhancing people-to-people and cultural ties.
Reaffirming their shared commitment, the two leaders vowed to sustain high-level exchanges and work closely to deepen bilateral relations in the years ahead.
