China has shown strong interest in investing in Pakistan’s communication sector, with major infrastructure projects such as the M-6 and M-9 Motorways, the Mansehra-Naran-Jalkhad Road, the Karakoram Highway upgrade, and development at Gwadar Port and Airport currently under active review.
This interest was highlighted during a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the 12th Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Transport Ministers’ meeting, where Pakistan’s Federal Minister for Communications, Abdul Aleem Khan, met with Chinese Transport Minister Liu Wei. The two leaders discussed key issues including the western alignment of CPEC, advancement of e-commerce, and the planned completion of the Bhasha Dam by 2029.
They also explored possibilities for establishing trade corridors through China that connect with Afghanistan, Iran, and other neighboring countries, according to an official press release issued on Tuesday.
Minister Abdul Aleem Khan thanked China for its ongoing support and reaffirmed Pakistan’s focus on improving its communication infrastructure, trade routes, and motorways. He invited Minister Liu Wei to visit Pakistan and emphasized that Pakistan is open to foreign investment in this sector, favoring both Business-to-Business (B2B) and Government-to-Government (G2G) collaborations.
Chinese Minister Liu Wei praised Pakistan’s active role in the SCO meeting and said that working in Pakistan is valuable for Chinese engineers and experts. He reaffirmed the enduring strength of the China-Pakistan relationship, rooted in mutual cooperation.
The two ministers also exchanged views on the upcoming visit of Pakistan’s Prime Minister to China in August 2025 and discussed future areas of bilateral cooperation, especially under the SCO framework. Besides Pakistan and China, the SCO meeting also includes participation from India, Belarus, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan. The official session and joint communiqué of the SCO Transport Ministers is scheduled for July 2.
