A Chinese envoy on Tuesday urged a return to the path of political resolution concerning the Iranian nuclear issue.
China believes a peaceful solution remains achievable, as diplomatic efforts have yet to be exhausted, said Fu Cong, China’s permanent representative to the United Nations, during a Security Council briefing.
He emphasized the importance of learning from past crises, restarting dialogue on the basis of equality, and steering all parties back toward a political settlement.
Fu highlighted that the immediate priority should be ending the ongoing conflict. He acknowledged recent developments and expressed hope for a real and lasting ceasefire.
He stressed that the concerned parties must take concrete steps to prevent renewed escalation, while the international community should work to defuse tensions and support dialogue and negotiation.
To maintain a balance between nuclear non-proliferation and peaceful use of nuclear energy, Fu urged Iran to uphold its pledge not to pursue nuclear weapons. He also called on other parties to respect Iran’s rights under the Non-Proliferation Treaty.
Fu reiterated China’s support for renewed negotiations and called on the Security Council to help foster trust and narrow differences, creating a conducive environment for dialogue.
He warned against the repeated threats to invoke the “snapback mechanism” for sanctions against Iran, saying such actions only escalate tensions and hinder diplomacy.
Fu noted that resolving the Iranian nuclear issue is critical to preserving the integrity of the international non-proliferation regime and ensuring Middle East peace and stability.
He concluded by stressing the urgency of the current situation, calling on all parties to act responsibly and restart talks promptly. As a permanent Security Council member and a party to the Iran nuclear deal, China will continue to uphold fairness, enhance coordination, and contribute constructively to peace efforts and political resolution in the region.
