Xi says dialogue, cooperation only path for China and US as he held a phone conversation with President Trump.
Chinese President Xi Jinping emphasized on Thursday that dialogue and cooperation remain the only correct path forward for China and the United States.
During a phone conversation initiated by U.S. President Donald Trump, Xi likened China-U.S. relations to a massive ship that requires both sides to steer carefully and set the right course, especially by avoiding unnecessary disturbances and distractions.
He pointed out that, at the U.S. side’s request, senior officials from both countries recently held an economic and trade meeting in Geneva. Xi described it as a significant step toward resolving issues through dialogue and consultation, a move that has been positively received by both nations and the international community.
Xi underlined the importance of making full use of the existing economic and trade consultation mechanisms to seek mutually beneficial outcomes. He stressed that China approaches these discussions with sincerity, while also adhering to its key principles.
He reaffirmed that the Chinese side honors its commitments and has been earnestly implementing the Geneva agreement. Xi urged both parties to follow through on what was agreed.
Xi also called on the U.S. to recognize the progress already achieved and to lift the restrictive measures it has imposed on China.
He further proposed strengthening communication across diplomacy, economic and trade affairs, military matters, and law enforcement in order to foster understanding, resolve misunderstandings, and enhance cooperation.
Regarding Taiwan, Xi stressed that the U.S. must handle the matter with care to prevent separatist forces advocating “Taiwan independence” from pushing the two nations toward conflict or confrontation.
President Trump conveyed his deep respect for Xi and reaffirmed the importance of the U.S.-China relationship.
He expressed his hope that China’s economy thrives, noting that both countries can achieve great results by working together.
Trump reiterated the United States’ commitment to the one-China policy.
He praised the Geneva meeting as a success that led to a strong agreement, adding that the U.S. is committed to working with China to ensure its implementation.
Trump also expressed a positive stance toward Chinese students studying in the U.S., saying they are welcome.
Xi invited Trump to visit China again, an invitation Trump appreciated sincerely.
The two leaders agreed that their respective teams should continue to implement the Geneva deal and hold another round of discussions as soon as possible.
