China saw a 47.6 percent year-on-year increase in charging infrastructure for new energy vehicles (NEVs) by the end of March 2025, as reported by the National Energy Administration (NEA), reflecting rapid expansion of its EV charging network.
Zhang Xing, an NEA official, stated during a press conference that the total number of charging facilities across the country had reached approximately 13.75 million by March’s end.
This total comprises 3.9 million public charging stations and 9.85 million private units, according to Zhang.
Currently, 98 percent of highway service areas are equipped with a total of 38,000 charging points, and 13 provincial-level regions have extended charging coverage to every township, pushing the township-level penetration rate to 76.91 percent.
To further integrate NEVs with the national power grid, the NEA has initiated pilot vehicle-to-grid (V2G) interaction programs in nine cities, including Shanghai, and approved 30 bidirectional charging projects for testing.
