China and Azerbaijan forge comprehensive strategic partnership as Chinese President Xi Jinping met with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev in Beijing on Wednesday for official talks.
During the meeting, both leaders announced the elevation of their bilateral relations to a comprehensive strategic partnership.
President Xi emphasized the importance of building stronger political trust, expanding practical collaboration, and enhancing joint efforts on the global stage to usher in a new phase of comprehensive cooperation.
Xi reiterated China’s support for Azerbaijan’s efforts to protect its sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity, and affirmed China’s respect for Azerbaijan’s independent development path.
Xi also expressed China’s readiness to deepen cooperation with Azerbaijan in law enforcement and security to jointly fight terrorism, extremism, and separatism.
He urged both nations to align their development strategies, promote high-quality collaboration under the Belt and Road Initiative, and boost exchanges in education, culture, tourism, youth, and regional cooperation.
President Xi criticized trade protectionism and trade wars, stating that they harm global economic stability and the multilateral trade system.
He said China is prepared to work alongside Azerbaijan to uphold a UN-centered international system and a legal international order, protecting mutual rights and promoting global fairness and justice.
President Aliyev noted the strong mutual respect and trust between Azerbaijan and China, highlighting the growing depth of economic, trade, and local-level cooperation.
Aliyev reaffirmed Azerbaijan’s firm support for the one-China principle, recognizing Taiwan as part of China and backing the Chinese government’s reunification efforts.
He praised President Xi’s global initiatives for fostering world peace and development and voiced Azerbaijan’s strong endorsement of these proposals.
Aliyev expressed his country’s willingness to expand cooperation with China in areas such as the Belt and Road Initiative, digital economy, green energy, science and technology, and to enhance political and people-to-people exchanges, as well as cooperation in regional and international affairs.
Following the talks, Xi and Aliyev signed a joint declaration to formalize the comprehensive strategic partnership and oversaw the signing of 20 agreements in fields like the BRI, justice, green development, IP rights, digital economy, and aerospace.
Before the discussions, Xi and his wife Peng Liyuan welcomed President Aliyev and First Lady Mehriban Aliyeva with a formal ceremony at the Great Hall of the People.
Later, Xi and Peng hosted an official banquet in honor of the Azerbaijani President and his spouse at the Golden Hall of the Great Hall of the People.
