Pakistan, China sign agreement for Digital Trade Academy aimed to enhance technical and vocational training.
On April 15, China and Pakistan launched a new phase of educational collaboration by signing the Digital Trade Silk Road Academy Agreement in Lahore. Five organizations: Zhejiang Technical Institute of Economics (Hangzhou), Zhung Lan Trading Company (Lahore), Punjab TEVTA (Lahore), Government Technical Training Institute Gulberg (Lahore), and ITMC Technology (Beijing), have partnered to create a framework aimed at strengthening vocational and technical training for Pakistan’s expanding digital economy.
This new educational venture builds upon the robust economic ties between the two nations. Leveraging China’s leadership in e-commerce and digital trade, the initiative seeks to modernize Pakistan’s technical education sector. As the global leader in online retail for 12 consecutive years, China saw a 7.2% rise in online sales in 2024. The “Silk Road E-commerce” platform has further expanded international partnerships, now connecting with 33 countries worldwide.
The partnership will transfer China’s most recent innovations in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) to Pakistan. Through the establishment of Centers of Excellence focused on digital skills, the initiative aims to significantly boost vocational and technical training standards in Pakistan.
The Digital Trade Silk Road Academy, managed by TEVTA at the Government Technical Training Institute Gulberg in Lahore, will initially offer courses in cross-border e-commerce. Future plans include expanding the curriculum to cover advanced logistics and broader e-commerce fields. This project supports Pakistan’s “Digital Pakistan” policy, emphasizing the development of competitive digital skills among youth for the evolving job market.
