The 2025 Chinese Opera Season commenced in Vienna on Saturday evening with a staging of the classic Wu Opera piece The Legend of the White Snake, marking the start of a series of Chinese operatic performances in the Austrian capital.
This year’s lineup in Vienna includes eight different productions showcasing diverse Chinese opera genres such as Wu Opera, Kunqu Opera, and Yue Opera.
Ming Wenjun, president of the China Opera Research Society, inaugurated the season, emphasizing that the varied theatrical forms represent the Chinese cultural principle of harmony through diversity.
The debut performance at Vienna’s Das MuTh concert hall depicted the timeless love story between Bai Suzhen, a woman who was once a white snake, and the scholar Xu Xian.
Wu Opera, which dates back to the Ming Dynasty (1368–1644), is celebrated for its combination of vigorous action sequences and traditional theatrical artistry.
