The Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) has played a crucial role in enhancing economic, trade, and cultural cooperation between China and its global partners. This initiative has contributed to China’s modernization while fostering global development, a national political adviser said on Tuesday.
Lin Songtian, deputy director of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the CPPCC National Committee, described the BRI as a significant global project that connects continents and promotes shared prosperity. He emphasized its long-term impact, benefiting both current and future generations.
Since its inception in 2013, the BRI has adhered to the principles of extensive consultation, joint contribution, and shared benefits. Over time, it has evolved into a widely accepted platform for international cooperation and public good.
The initiative has prioritized connectivity in five key areas: policy coordination, infrastructure development, unimpeded trade, financial integration, and people-to-people exchanges.
According to Lin, the BRI has improved the lives of people in more than 150 countries, offering a new model for global cooperation, mutual benefits, and shared progress.
As improved connectivity drives economic growth, the BRI has facilitated the development of participating nations by enhancing investment opportunities and establishing industrial parks and economic zones.
The initiative has generated substantial employment opportunities, boosted local economies, and enabled Chinese enterprises to expand globally through well-supported industrial zones, infrastructure, and policy measures.
Lin highlighted that each successful BRI infrastructure project has had a lasting impact, attracting international attention and contributing to long-term development.
In Asia, the China-Laos Railway has transformed Laos into a regional transport hub, strengthening its economy and supporting regional trade, including the China-ASEAN Free Trade Area.
In Africa, the Addis Ababa-Djibouti Railway has given over 100 million Ethiopians direct access to a seaport, accelerating economic growth and poverty alleviation.
In Latin America, Peru’s Chancay Port has emerged as a crucial Pacific gateway and South America’s first green and smart logistics hub. This has bolstered China-Latin America trade competitiveness and mutual economic development.
The China-Europe Railway Express now connects 25 countries and over 220 cities, with more than 100,000 freight trains in operation. This has strengthened economic ties between Asia and Europe while deepening cooperation with China’s European partners.
With collaborative efforts, Lin expressed confidence that high-quality BRI cooperation will empower Chinese people globally while enabling other nations to benefit from shared opportunities and sustainable development.
