China’s DeepSeek tops charts, outpace ChatGPT in free app downloads on Apple App store.
China’s homegrown AI model, DeepSeek, has climbed to the top of the free app download charts in the U.S. Apple App Store, surpassing ChatGPT. It also ranked first in the free app category in China.
On January 20, the Chinese AI firm DeepSeek officially released its latest model, DeepSeek-R1, aiming to compete directly with OpenAI’s o1 model.
According to international benchmark tests conducted on Friday, DeepSeek-R1 secured third place on the global leaderboard, Arena, across all categories. Notably, in the Style Control Model (StyleCtrl) category, it tied with OpenAI’s o1 for first place, scoring 1,357, narrowly exceeding o1’s score of 1,352.
DeepSeek-R1’s release caused a stir in the U.S. tech industry, not only for its competitive performance but also because it is fully open-source and achieved its breakthrough at a remarkably low cost.
Alexandr Wang, CEO of Scale AI, remarked that while the U.S. has maintained a lead in the AI race for the past decade, DeepSeek’s new AI model could be a game-changer. He noted that DeepSeek’s performance rivals the best models developed in the U.S.
Meanwhile, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg revealed plans to invest over $60 billion to construct a massive data center in Louisiana to support its latest AI model, Llama 4.
In contrast, Nvidia shares dropped 3.12% last Friday, the steepest single-day decline since the Consumer Technology Association exhibition, amid concerns about the potential risks of an AI market bubble.
