Maldives President meets Chinese FM to deepen cooperation as Wang Yi had a stopover in Maldives while returning from Africa.
Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu met with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Friday, with both leaders pledging to strengthen cooperation across multiple sectors. The meeting occurred during Wang’s stopover in the Maldives on his return from Africa.
Muizzu reflected on his successful state visit to China last year, emphasizing the mutual understanding and sincerity that characterize China-Maldives relations. He acknowledged the strong high-level exchanges and productive collaborations between the two nations, noting with satisfaction that China is now the Maldives’ largest source of tourists.
The president expressed the Maldives’ commitment to remaining China’s closest partner, further solidifying their traditional friendship, enhancing cooperation in various fields, and promoting the growth of bilateral relations.
Muizzu also praised China’s leadership in maintaining global peace and stability. He expressed a willingness to deepen coordination and collaboration with China on international and regional issues to uphold fairness and justice on the global stage.
Wang Yi highlighted Muizzu’s state visit to China as a significant milestone in China-Maldives relations. He noted that the two countries’ leaders had agreed to elevate ties to a comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership and work toward building a China-Maldives community with a shared future, offering promising opportunities for bilateral collaboration.
Wang pointed out that China-Maldives cooperation exemplifies mutual respect, equality, and shared development between nations, regardless of size. He expressed appreciation for the Maldives’ adherence to the one-China principle and its friendly stance towards China.
China will continue to support the Maldives in safeguarding its national independence and sovereignty, while encouraging it to pursue a development path tailored to its unique national conditions, Wang assured.
