China and Nigeria should consistently support each other on key concerns, fostering mutual trust and strengthening China-Africa cooperation and Africa’s modernization, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi emphasized on Thursday.
Wang, a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, made these remarks during a press briefing following his meeting with Nigerian Foreign Minister Yusuf Tuggar in Abuja.
Guided by Chinese President Xi Jinping and Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, China-Nigeria relations have achieved three significant milestones, Wang noted.
Firstly, the relationship has been elevated to a comprehensive strategic partnership, marking a new chapter as announced jointly by the two presidents.
Secondly, collaboration has been institutionalized with the successful first plenary session of the China-Nigeria Intergovernmental Committee, paving the way for enhanced cooperation and progress.
Thirdly, the two nations have deepened their international cooperation, aligning efforts in regional and global affairs to advance the collective development and rise of the Global South.
Over the past five decades, despite global changes, China and Nigeria have nurtured friendly, practical ties grounded in equality and mutual respect. This relationship has become a model for South-South cooperation and a cornerstone of China-Africa collaboration, Wang said.
Wang stressed the importance of maintaining the strategic depth of their partnership, as directed by the leadership of both countries.
He also highlighted the exemplary role of China-Nigeria relations, urging the nations to set a benchmark in bilateral ties.
The complementary strengths of China and Nigeria should be utilized to explore new areas of collaboration, such as clean energy, green minerals, and finance, Wang added.
Furthermore, the two nations should expand the scope of their partnership by fostering development across diverse sectors, including trade, agriculture, culture, defense, technology, and space exploration.
Wang expressed optimism that with joint efforts, the comprehensive strategic partnership between China and Nigeria will achieve even greater success in the future.
