Chinese diplomat calls for political settlement of Iranian nuclear issue in a recent meeting of IAEA.
A senior Chinese diplomat on Thursday urged all parties to adopt a constructive approach toward resolving the Iranian nuclear issue.
Li Song, China’s permanent representative to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), called for calm and responsible actions to address the situation during a meeting of the agency’s board of governors.
During the meeting, Germany, France, the UK, and the U.S. advocated for a resolution to pressure Iran. However, China, Russia, and Burkina Faso opposed it, while 12 developing countries, including South Africa, India, and Egypt, abstained from voting.
Li expressed China’s support for Iran’s cooperation with the IAEA, commending the positive interactions between IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi and Iran, which recently yielded encouraging results.
He argued that creating confrontation and escalating tensions within the board of governors hinders cooperation between Iran and the IAEA, further complicating the issue instead of resolving it.
Li emphasized that pressure and confrontation are ineffective in addressing the Iranian nuclear issue, advocating for political and diplomatic efforts on multilateral platforms as the proper approach to non-proliferation challenges.
