President Xi encourages more China-Finland cooperation in emerging industries aiming to set a new framework for mutually beneficial partnership.
Chinese President Xi Jinping expressed China’s welcome for Finland to actively engage in the modernization process of China and to broaden cooperation in emerging industries during talks with Finnish President Alexander Stubb in Beijing on Tuesday.
Xi urged both nations to enhance collaboration in areas such as green transformation, information technology, the digital economy, artificial intelligence, and new energy, aiming to establish a new framework of mutually beneficial cooperation for the future.
He highlighted Finland’s historic role as one of the first Western nations to establish diplomatic relations with China and its status as the first Western country to sign a trade agreement with the People’s Republic of China.
Xi remarked that given the rapid global changes and increasing challenges faced by humanity, the forward-looking cooperative partnership between China and Finland is of significant value and should be nurtured and promoted.
He noted that practical cooperation between China and Finland began early, has produced fruitful results, and holds great potential for future collaboration.
China is eager to enhance people-to-people exchanges with Finland and has announced a unilateral visa-free policy for Finnish citizens, encouraging more visits for business, tourism, and education.
Xi emphasized that both nations share a commitment to peace, multilateralism, and free trade, expressing China’s willingness to strengthen cooperation with Finland on issues such as climate change, biodiversity, global sustainable development, and artificial intelligence governance.
As next year marks the 50th anniversary of diplomatic ties between China and the European Union (EU), Xi encouraged Finland to continue its active role in fostering stable and healthy development of China-EU relations.
President Stubb expressed his pleasure at visiting China soon after taking office and meeting Xi again after 14 years, acknowledging the profound changes in the global landscape and China’s impressive achievements since their last encounter.
Stubb reaffirmed Finland’s adherence to the one-China policy and its intention to celebrate the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations with China next year, while also committing to deepen cooperation in economy, trade, green energy, and sustainable development.
He expressed appreciation for China’s initiatives aimed at addressing global challenges and emphasized Finland’s dedication to enhancing multilateral exchanges and coordination with China.
Stubb noted the interconnectedness of the EU and Chinese economies, stating that “decoupling” or entering a “new Cold War” would be detrimental to all parties, and Finland is committed to promoting positive development in EU-China relations.
The two leaders discussed the Ukraine crisis and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, with Xi affirming China’s readiness to collaborate with all relevant parties, including Finland, to foster a peaceful resolution to these crises.
Following their discussions, Xi and Stubb witnessed the signing of several agreements on bilateral cooperation in education, water resources, environmental protection, circular economy, and agricultural products.
The two countries also released the Joint Action Plan for Promoting the Future-oriented New-type Cooperative Partnership between China and Finland for the years 2025-2029.
