Chinese President Xi Jinping’s participation in the 16th BRICS Summit marks a strengthened phase of BRICS unity and new opportunities for the Global South, Foreign Minister Wang Yi stated.
Following Xi’s visit to Kazan, Wang highlighted China’s role as a central contributor to BRICS cooperation and as a vital member of the Global South. During the summit, Xi emphasized the need for deeper BRICS collaboration, underscoring that BRICS should serve as a primary channel for solidarity and a leader in reforming global governance.
Xi outlined that BRICS nations should prioritize peace, innovation, green growth, justice, and cultural exchanges while leading on issues like common security and sustainable development. He also introduced eight measures to enhance BRICS cooperation.
The summit achieved consensus on expanding BRICS with new partner countries, which Wang contrasted with Cold War-era alliances, describing BRICS as a force driving inclusive globalization and a multipolar world. He noted the Global South’s emergence as a key force, though acknowledging that the path to prosperity will be challenging.
Xi urged BRICS nations to harness their collective strength to support peace, development, and intercultural exchange, positioning themselves as leaders in sustainable global development, Wang added.
Marking the 75th anniversary of China-Russia relations, Xi and Russian President Vladimir Putin emphasized their nations’ balanced approach, characterized by non-alliance and non-confrontation.
The summit also attracted attention to Xi’s meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, their first formal interaction in five years. Xi encouraged both countries to foster harmonious ties, support mutual development, and set an example of unity among developing nations. Both leaders agreed to prioritize stability along their shared border and work toward a steady, positive relationship.
