On Wednesday, Chinese President Xi Jinping emphasized that regardless of changes in the international and regional landscape, China will steadfastly pursue friendly cooperation with Iran.
Xi made these statements during a meeting with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian at the 16th BRICS Summit. He acknowledged Iran as a nation of significant regional and global influence and a trusted friend and partner of China.
He noted that the strategic importance of the China-Iran relationship has grown more pronounced amid unprecedented global transformations occurring rapidly.
Xi reaffirmed China’s support for Iran in protecting its national sovereignty, security, and dignity while continuing its economic and social progress. He also encouraged the strengthening of amicable relationships with neighboring countries.
China is prepared to collaborate with Iran to mutually support each other, uphold fundamental norms in international relations such as non-interference, and protect the legitimate rights and interests of both nations. He expressed China’s willingness to enhance exchanges and cooperation across various sectors to promote the stable development of their comprehensive strategic partnership, ultimately benefiting both peoples.
Xi congratulated Iran on its first participation in the BRICS Summit as a full member, indicating that China is eager to bolster cooperation with Iran in BRICS and other multilateral settings, thereby amplifying the voice and influence of the Global South and fostering a more equitable international order.
Masoud Pezeshkian’s Remarks
Pezeshkian remarked that China is Iran’s most significant cooperation partner, highlighting the healthy momentum in their comprehensive strategic partnership and collaboration across multiple fields.
He expressed Iran’s desire to work with China to realize their comprehensive cooperation plan, deepening collaboration in areas like connectivity, infrastructure, and clean energy, which would enhance Iran’s national development and contribute to regional peace and stability.
Pezeshkian also reiterated Iran’s commitment to support China on core interests and to oppose hegemony and bullying. He expressed gratitude to China for backing Iran’s formal accession to the BRICS cooperation framework and looked forward to closer collaboration within BRICS and other multilateral platforms.
The two leaders also discussed the current situation in the Middle East. Xi expressed China’s deep concern regarding the conditions in the region, stressing that an immediate ceasefire and an end to the conflict in Gaza are crucial for alleviating regional tensions. He urged the international community to unite in encouraging relevant parties to diligently adhere to UN Security Council resolutions to prevent further instability in the area.
