Ambassador Khalil represents Pakistan at ‘9th Belt and Road Summit’ in HK which highlighted the importance of sustainable development.
Pakistani Ambassador to China, Khalil Hashmi, attended the 9th Belt and Road Summit in Hong Kong, which focused on “Building a Connected, Innovative, and Green Belt and Road.” He encouraged Hong Kong entrepreneurs to invest in Pakistan under the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), highlighting the importance of global partnerships and sustainable development.
The Ambassador shared how the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) had significantly boosted Pakistan’s economy over the last decade, creating jobs, adding 8,000 MW to the national grid, and developing 800 km of road infrastructure. He outlined CPEC’s next phase, which will focus on growth, innovation, and inclusiveness in line with Pakistan’s “5Es” strategy, targeting exports, digital transformation, climate change, energy, and equity.
He also emphasized Pakistan’s expanding IT sector, fueled by a growing internet user base. He invited Hong Kong companies to invest in Pakistan’s fintech sector, which offers opportunities for digital banking and blockchain solutions but requires venture capital, a gap Hong Kong investors could fill.
The Ambassador highlighted Pakistan’s goal to source 30% of its energy from renewable sources by 2030, encouraging Hong Kong’s financial institutions to invest in hydropower, solar, and wind projects. He also pointed out the Special Economic Zones (SEZs) under CPEC as ideal locations for Hong Kong businesses to invest in manufacturing and logistics.
While in Hong Kong, the Ambassador engaged with local leadership and media.
