Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi expressed China’s support for Iran in defending its sovereignty, security, and national dignity in accordance with the law during a call with Iranian Acting Foreign Minister Ali Bagheri Kani on Sunday. Wang emphasized China’s willingness to maintain close communication with Iran and support its efforts to uphold regional peace and stability.
The discussion between the two sides primarily focused on the Middle East situation, as stated by the Chinese Foreign Ministry. Bagheri outlined Iran’s position on the assassination of a Hamas leader and shared views on the regional situation, stressing Iran’s commitment to defending its sovereignty, security, and territorial integrity, while also working to maintain regional peace and stability.
De-escalation of Tensions
Bagheri expressed gratitude to China for its impartial stance on the Palestinian-Israeli conflict and urged China to play a more active role in de-escalating tensions and promoting security in the Middle East.
Wang reiterated China’s commitment to justice in Middle East affairs, supporting all parties in protecting their legitimate rights, particularly in restoring the rightful national rights of the Palestinians.
Wang strongly condemned the assassination, labeling it a severe violation of international norms, an infringement on Iran’s sovereignty, security, and dignity, and a disruption to the cease-fire negotiations in Gaza, with negative implications for regional peace and stability.
He called for a collective international effort to urge all conflict parties to adhere to relevant UN Security Council resolutions and to create conditions for a comprehensive and permanent cease-fire in Gaza as soon as possible.
Furthermore, Wang highlighted Iran’s significant regional influence and reaffirmed the comprehensive strategic partnership between China and Iran. He expressed China’s commitment to continuing mutual support on core issues, advancing practical cooperation, and fostering the healthy development of China-Iran relations.
Wang welcomed Iran’s active participation in activities hosted by China as the rotating chair of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, aiming to strengthen this international organization.
Wang also indicated China’s readiness to enhance cooperation with Iran within the BRICS framework to amplify the voice and influence of the Global South and to push for a more just and rational international governance system.
Bagheri conveyed Iran’s willingness to deepen coordination with China on international and regional matters and to enrich the strategic dimensions of their bilateral relationship.
