July 31 – China and India accelerate border talks in order to sustain peace in border regions and maintain communications through diplomatic channels.
In an effort to address longstanding border disputes, China and India convened the 30th Meeting of the Working Mechanism for Consultation and Coordination on Border Affairs on Wednesday. Both nations agreed to expedite negotiations to sustain peace in the border regions.
The meeting was jointly led by Hong Liang, Director-General of the Department of Boundary and Ocean Affairs of the Chinese Foreign Ministry, and Gourangalal Das, Joint Secretary of the East Asia Division of the Indian Ministry of External Affairs.
Both sides concurred on the active implementation of the significant agreements reached during their recent foreign ministers’ meeting. They focused on addressing specific issues related to the China-India border, acknowledging each other’s legitimate concerns, and aiming to reach a mutually satisfactory resolution promptly.
The two countries committed to maintaining communication through diplomatic and military channels, enhancing the negotiation framework, and accelerating the negotiation process to resolve the border issues swiftly, thereby promoting healthy and stable China-India relations. They also agreed to strictly adhere to previously established agreements and protocols, continuing to ensure peace and tranquility in the border areas.
Wednesday’s discussions followed a meeting between Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar in Vientiane, Laos, last week, where both sides agreed to resolve their differences and steer bilateral relations back onto a positive and constructive path.
