Daewoo Express, a prominent inter-city transport service provider in Pakistan, is gearing up to gradually introduce 200 China-manufactured electric buses over the next two years. If successfully implemented, this initiative will mark the debut of an electric vehicle (EV)-based inter-city bus service in Pakistan, as reported by Gwadar Pro on Thursday.
The electric buses are anticipated to commence operations in the summer of the upcoming year, with the entire fleet of 200 buses expected to be operational by mid-2026. Designed for short routes with a maximum distance of 225 kilometers, these electric buses aim to eliminate the need for mid-journey charging, enhancing passenger convenience.
The planned routes for these 200 electric buses include 17 short journeys such as Karachi to Hyderabad, Peshawar to Rawalpindi, Lahore to Faisalabad, and Lahore to Sialkot.
Sheriar Hassan, General Manager at Daewoo Express, stated, “We will have charging facilities at all of our terminals where these electric buses operate.” However, the impact on inter-city fares remains uncertain, as the fluctuating prices of diesel and electricity complicate predictions. The representative acknowledged the higher upfront cost of electric buses compared to diesel buses but expressed the possibility of entering the electric bus manufacturing business if the pilot project proves successful.
