720 MW Karot Hydro Power Project, the first Hydel Project under China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) is completed. The plant will generate 3 Billion units of cheap electricity.

The Karot Hydropower Station closed the gates of its diversion tunnels on Saturday after six years of construction, and officially started to impound water, the accumulation of water in its reservoir for future use.

Karot Hydropower Project in Pakistan is the first large hydropower project under the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and the first investment project of the Silk Road Fund.

Invested by the China Three Gorges Corporation (CTG) with a total of about 1.74 billion U.S. dollars, the Karot hydropower project in eastern Punjab is the fourth level of the five cascade hydropower stations planned for the Jhelum River.

With the completion of this project, Pakistan, with the help of China, has moved one step closer to generating clean, green and cheap energy.

The plant will be transferred to the government of Punjab in 30 years. Once completed, the project is also expected to help reduce carbon dioxide emissions in Pakistan by 3.5 million tons per year.
