Foreign Minister Wang Yi reiterates peace at UNGA Session in New York while expressing concern over global stability.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi delivered a speech at the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, where he reaffirmed China’s commitment to peace as the solution for global conflicts and crises. Analysts noted that Wang’s remarks reflected China’s confidence in peace and development, while also expressing concern over the current global instability.

Wang, a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, gave a speech titled “Building on past achievements and forging ahead together toward a community with a shared future for mankind.” The speech highlighted China’s active participation in global governance in response to the growing global challenges.

In his speech, Wang noted that China has not remained passive in global affairs. Rather, under President Xi Jinping’s leadership, China has introduced the Global Development Initiative, the Global Security Initiative, and the Global Civilization Initiative, which contribute China’s ideas for resolving major global issues and enhancing global governance.

According to Li Haidong, a professor from the China Foreign Affairs University, these initiatives offer Chinese wisdom to address global challenges, encouraging an end to zero-sum thinking and bloc confrontations. The goal is to achieve sustainable peace and security through a cooperative, inclusive, and comprehensive approach.

The initiatives also promote respect for diversity among civilizations and discourage arrogance in addressing international differences. China’s stance in global governance reflects its responsibility as a major global power, according to Li.

Wang also discussed the impact of Chinese modernization, explaining its significance in promoting world peace, development, governance, and civilization. He emphasized that each step of China’s growth contributes to global stability and peace.

Wang’s speech highlighted that China is a peace-focused nation, concentrating on its development and the well-being of its people. At the same time, China is actively engaged in international affairs, advocating for global justice and stability, said Li.

Zhu Yongbiao from Lanzhou University noted that while China is eager to collaborate with the global community on major issues, it opposes the hegemonic and unilateral actions of certain countries, especially unilateral sanctions and economic blockades, which aim to maintain an unjust global economic order.

In addressing global conflicts like those in Ukraine, Palestine, and Afghanistan, Wang reiterated that peace is the only path forward. He called for no expansion or escalation of the Ukraine conflict and urged all parties to work toward de-escalation.

Wang’s remarks on Ukraine and the Middle East drew significant attention, with some Western countries critical of China’s peace initiatives. However, a growing number of nations, including Switzerland, have expressed support for China’s proposals, seeing them as genuine efforts for peace.

Unlike Western nations, which often pursue their own interests by intensifying conflicts, China and other Global South countries are working to promote peace, analysts noted.

Wang also reaffirmed China’s position on Taiwan, stressing that it is an inseparable part of China’s territory. He emphasized that there is no ambiguity on this issue, particularly regarding Resolution 2758, which recognizes the one-China principle.

Wang’s remarks on Taiwan at UNGA clarified China’s firm stance, rejecting attempts by anti-China forces and Taiwan separatists to reinterpret Resolution 2758. Li emphasized that these forces should not have any illusions about undermining the one-China principle.
